Where to take your pictures (And Why the Location Isn't Everything)

Before choosing from these beautiful portrait locations in Santa Barbara County, remember that the location is only one small part of your session. Portrait photography is all about  you—your personality, connection, and story. Since most portraits are taken up close, the background naturally fades into a soft blur, making you the true focus. Instead of stressing over finding the "perfect" spot, choose a location that speaks to you and the overall feel you're envisioning. More importantly, focus on your outfits and follow the styling guide I provide, as what you wear has a much bigger impact on creating timeless, beautiful portraits than the background itself.

Thing to consider:

  • Central Coast locations change throughout the year, from lush coastal greens in spring and summer to warm, golden tones in fall and winter. Check Google or Instagram for recent photos to get an idea of what to expect.

  • Coastal overcast is common in our area and can create beautiful, soft light, but it won’t give us that warm, golden glow—especially during the colder months. If the day is looking a little too dreary, you’ll always have the option to reschedule for a clearer day.

  • Research your location. Make sure it’s open to the public and check for photography permits, prior permission, reservations, parking, or entrance fees before your session.
